Nice weather, fine music and good food helped attract 1,360 people to the 12th annual 2019 WTIP North Shore Community Radio Radio Waves Music Festival held September 6-8 at the Grand Marais Recreation Park near Sweetheart’s Bluff.
The number of people who attended was up from last year, said WTIP development director, Staci Drouillard.
In addition, 26 acts featuring105 musicians graced the stage, from 4 p.m. on Friday until 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
“We had the help of 41 volunteers, including Grand Marais printmaker Mike Swindlehurst, who printed Radio Waves T-shirts for kids on Saturday,” said Drouillard, noting the T-shirts were free to kids of all ages who wanted to take one home.
A kids’ tent offered face painting, Legos, crafts and other activities to keep the little ones busy while mom and dad listened to the tunes coming from the stage.
The music was as varied as the artists who performed. There was jazz, rock, folk rock, swing and country to take in, dance to, sing along with or tap one’s toe to.
Three food vendors were on site, said Drouillard, “And we had the support of a number of area businesses and organizations, including The Violence Prevention Center, who had a booth in the park on Saturday, and the Grand Marais Music Collaborative, who brought their teachers and students together for a great set on Sunday afternoon.”
