WTIP North Shore Community Radio welcomed 1,000 music fans to the 15th Annual Radio Waves Music Festival, September 9 – 11. Utilizing the natural amphitheater at Sweetheart’s Bluff in the Grand Marais Rec Park, this community-oriented festival kicked off on Friday, with classic country by the Portage Band. The rainy weather didn’t keep local music fans from enjoying a great variety of music that afternoon and evening, including a bracing performance by Colleen “Boss Mama” Myhre, hip-hop by Dre AKA Jamaican and a lively set by local dance favorites The Splints.
Festival organizer Staci Drouillard confirmed that, “music fans and our amazing lineup of performers were all happy to be back in the Park, after taking a two-year hiatus from an in-person festival.”
Saturday was a jam-packed day of diverse musical performances that ranged from folk and jazz to the raucous rock-and-roll of Rich Mattson and the Northstars. A full, Harvest Moon rose over the big tent, where listeners enjoyed the inventive folkrock of local singer-songwriter Ginger Bones and a revelatory show by The Evening Stars. Thank you, dancers! On Sunday morning, the North Shore Swing Band, led by Kathy Bolstad, played a two-hour set of classics and “big band” swing for the enthusiastic crowd. Kenna Rose, followed by Pete K and Zulu Link rounded out this great weekend of live, local music.
