In some ways Putin has everything to lose. If he backs off in Ukraine, he admits weakness and exactly like Trump, an admission of weakness is anathema. It doesn’t matter if the invasion is based on lies and a deluded view of history, just like it doesn’t matter for Trump that he lies about an election and deludes himself and others into hamstringing free and fair elections. For Putin women, children, elderly, journalists, dissidents, non-combatants – all are fair game, and Trump would love to throw dissenters in prison and his most ardent supporters in the GOP think disagreeing with him should be a capital crime.
What a surprise that Trump would admire Putin’s willingness to cover every tool available to him with the blood of his opponents, Stalingrad inflicted instead of received. Trump would sacrifice democracy for a permanent place in the White House to bestow favors on his chosen oligarchs and Putin will shred what is left of freedom in Russia to bleed Ukraine for a lie. Would Putin eat Trump alive? Yes, he would, but he would eat most of his admirers in the US alive, though only after they’d served his purpose (knowingly or not). What then does one do when it appears so many people have forgotten “Never Again” or “Never Forget” or decided democracy is inconvenient for their desire for power?
