Yum.

Walk into Gunflint Mercantile and the amazing sights and smells of golden caramel, fresh fudge, a rainbow-colored collection of assorted candies, merchandise, and all sorts of tasty treats greet you.

Pretty soon, though, the aroma of fresh bread and cookies and other bakery delicacies will waft through the store, joining the merry parade of smells, sights, and sounds.

After eight years, Chelsea Pusc, owner and operator of Gunflint Mercantile, decided it was time to expand, and on November 1, 2018, she purchased Elfvin’s Bakery. And, said Pusc, she will now sell some of the baked goods at her downtown store.

Jessy Carlson, who just moved to the area, has been hired three days a week to help Chelsea bake at the aptly named Gunflint Baking Company, the new title for the business which will still be located at Betsy Bowen’s Studio.

Chelsea will continue to offer the famous Elfvin rye bread and carrot cake, and she is exploring adding other loaves of bread like a mouth-watering cranberry wild rice selection.

“I will also continue to supply the Cook County Whole Foods Coop, Angry Trout and the Crooked Spoon and other restaurants with desserts and baked goods,” she added.

When asked how the new venture was going Chelsea smiled and answered, “I was getting orders before the sale was even complete.”

Another addition will be baking and selling dog treats. “I have been after Holly Hartwig’s dog treats recipes for the last four years and she finally sold them to me,” replied Pusc.

Hartwig, who now lives in Colorado, also may continue to sell her dog treats, but Chelsea said due to the great distance, they wouldn’t be in competition with each other.

Coming soon to her downtown store will be batches of holiday cookies. Specialty cakes and pies for Thanksgiving (or any occasion) can be ordered by emailing Chelsea at gunflintbaking@gmail.com.
