Commissioners passed a motion authorizing an essay contest for high school seniors. The winning contestant will be entered into the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association (MMUA) Tom Bovitz Memorial Scholarship essay contest. Contestants must be PUC customers or have parents or guardians who are PUC customers.
Winning essays will be 500 to 1,000 words and address the theme Municipal utilities: good for all of us. Local winnings will be $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place, and state-level winnings will be $2,000, $1,500, $1,000, and $500 for the top four places.
The MMUA contest is for those who will attend a post-secondary educational institution and winnings are paid jointly to the student and the educational institution.
PUC Utility Administrative Specialist Jan Smith said that two Grand Marais students have been among the winners in the state-level contest. She can be reached for contest details at (218)387-1848. Local submissions are due by April 1.
