PUC essay contest could earn scholarships for local seniors

Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission Board Secretary Jan Smith introduced the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association scholarship award program to the board on January 21. This scholarship contest is open to Cook County High School seniors. Seniors must submit a short essay to the Grand Marais PUC about what they feel PUC contributes to their lives.

The first place scholarship is $500, second place is $300 and third place is awarded $200. Smith said entries must be in by March 26. Forms can be picked up at the high school or Grand Marais City Hall.

Smith also said CCHS seniors can enter the MMUA Tom Bovitz Memorial Scholarship Award program sponsored by Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association. The scholarship fund totals $5,000 and will be split four ways, with first place receiving $2,000; second $1,500; third $1,000; and $500 to fourth place essay contest winners who plan to attend a post-secondary educational institution.

Essays must be original and run in length from 500 to 750 words, typed and double-spaced. These are due April 15, 2015.

This year’s theme is Municipal utilities: good for all of us. This applies to municipal electric and natural gas utilities.
