Public transportation for seniors—and others

Brighter side of aging



There is public transportation in Cook County. No, it is not new. Arrowhead Transit, a division of Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, has operated bus service in the county since 1974. The buses operate out of the Senior Center, but everyone— adults, children, visitors, senior citizens—is welcome to ride Arrowhead Transit buses. All of the buses are equipped with lifts for use by persons with disabilities.

An Arrowhead Transit bus operates within five miles of Grand Marais, Monday – Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Call the driver at (218) 370-1515 to tell him when and where you want to be picked up. Each trip costs only $1.00. Grand Marais State Bank provides free rides for everyone on the Grand Marais bus on the first and third Fridays of every month. If you are aged 90 plus, you always ride the bus for free.

An Arrowhead Transit bus leaves from the Grand Marais Municipal Parking Lot for Grand Portage Monday – Friday at 7:15 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m. and costs $2.00. The bus leaves Grand Portage at 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Call the bus driver at (218) 410-1193 for a reservation or to request a pick-up between Grand Marais and Grand Portage.

There is an Arrowhead Transit bus to Duluth on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of every month. The bus leaves Grand Marais at 7:15 a.m. and returns around 5:00 p.m. The fare to Duluth from Grand Marais is $25.00. Call the bus driver at (218) 370-1515 for a reservation and a pick-up point. Check with the driver for the fare from other locations. You may be dropped off anywhere in Duluth.

The Senior Center is undergoing a transformation. The dining room is being painted, carpet will be installed, and the north and west doors will soon have electronic assist. When completed, the room will be the Mountain View Room. Stop in to check the progress.

We will be playing Scrabble at the Senior Center starting at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons. Players of any skill level and age are invited to play. Monday and Wednesday afternoons we will be watching videos of local events. Cribbage is played every Thursday morning at 9:45 a.m. and ‘500’ is played at noon on Monday.

At 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, we will be touring the Fiber Guild Show at the Johnson Heritage Post. At 12:30 p.m. on Monday, July 20, Alta McQuatters will guide our tour of the Cook County Historical Museum.

Join us for a trip on the North Shore Scenic Railroad from Duluth to Two Harbors on Friday, July 24 for $47.50. Thebus leaves at 7:30 a.m. and we’ll have lunch at the Rustic Inn.

There is room on the bus for our trip to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on August 31- September 4. Sixteen people will see some great scenery from the Agawa Canyon Tour Train and from our bus for $452/person double occupancy or $399/person triple occupancy.
