A public hearing on the proposed Cook County Subsurface Sewage Treatment System Ordinance will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18 at the Cook County courthouse. The ordinance addresses requirements that, if adopted, would affect all Cook County property owners not utilizing municipal sewer systems.
The proposed ordinance, drafted by committee, establishs minimum standards for wastewater treatment and septic systems, including how often systems must be pumped, regardless of how frequently dwellings are occupied. It sets requirements for permits and management plans and outlines procedures for oversight of installation, alteration, repair, expansion and replacement of septic systems.
The draft calls for inspection and, possibly, upgrades whenever a property changes hands, whether through sale of the property or transfer of ownership from one family member to another.
If adopted, the ordinance would call for increased oversight by the Cook County Planning & Zoning Department. Thedepartment would regularly inspect all septic, wastewater, and human waste treatment systems, including non-standard ones such as outhouses.
The hearing will be part of a meeting of the Cook County Planning & Zoning Commission.
