Public hearing on annexation

Cook County commissioners held a public hearing at 10 a.m. in the commissioners’ room on Tuesday, June 20 to consider the annexation of Deeryard properties in Lutsen Township. No dissenting voices were heard, and the annexation was approved.

On May 9, County Auditor/ Treasurer Braidy Power introduced a petition signed by 10 year-round homeowners on Deeryard Lake, which is an unorganized territory, to become part of Lutsen Township.

At that meeting David Morris, president of the Deeryard Lake Association said, “This is a voter initiative by those who live here full-time.”

Morris said the other lot owners on the lake had been notified about the petition, and only four responded back, none negatively.

Assessor Todd Smith came before the board with some abatements, which were all approved.

Commissioners weren’t exactly “Waiting for Godot,” but Rena Rogers, IT & Communications director, who was scheduled to talk about a contract with T-Mobile to add cell service to the Grand Portage information tower, never made it to the meeting because she was waiting for more information to present to the board. Rogers will be placed on an upcoming agenda.

Auditor/Treasurer Braidy Powers asked the board to approve hiring Keli Berg to replace Karen Blackburn as the accountant/financial coordinator in the Auditor/Treasurer’s Office. Berg has spent the last 12 years working for George Maruska Accounting and most recently for Licari Larsen & Co., who purchased the business from George. The board approved the hiring.

Consent agenda items approved:

. Commissioners accepted the resignation of Ron Gervais, the attendant at the Tofte Transfer Station, and re-posted the position. Gervais will work into July until a replacement is found. The job is 12 hours in the winter and 18 hours per week from mid-May to mid- October.

. Commissioners agreed to amend the credit card policy to authorize an additional credit card that will be issued to the Emergency Management director and an additional card to be issued to Soil and Water Conservation District. Powers said that there is only one card now, and people who need to use it for small purchases for their departments must come to his office for the card.
