Protect the peace and quiet of the harbor

When friends recently traveled the distance from Minneapolis for a peaceful experience along the beautiful Grand Marais harbor, they instead found themselves engulfed by a private religious rock fest. There was no such thing as a quiet walk along the shore. A pleasant outdoor dining experience became impossible as the sound was unrelenting. The only escape was to leave town, which they did. They did not stay to shop, but left in disgust two days earlier than planned, left for quieter venues in Canada. Our loss!

Sound amplification should be banned along the harbor as it is impossible to limit the sound to the audience choosing to hear it. Sound is sensory and personal, and like smell, may seem a sweet incense to some and a stink bomb to others.

Amplification restrictions are needed because such group leaders often subscribe to “louder is better” as if all should appreciate their voice. Helpful and willing young people were led to participate in disrespect. Did anyone tell them that to keep the music and yelling to themselves would indeed be a most appreciated community service?

Few may verbalize this complaint for fear of offending some religion, but religious groups should not be above common courtesy. Park Board, are you listening? Please protect the peace and quiet.
