As a seasonal resident of Cook County for over 40 years, I have an interest in the current levy discussions going on locally. I cannot vote on this matter, but as a property owner and not a full-time resident I will live with the consequences of the decisions made, as I do now. It appears to me that the consequences of past decisions have created the current situation. This did not happen overnight.
While I have started to read more closely recent letters to the editor and columnist comments, I have not attended county informational meetings on the subject. What I take away from those readings is that past county leadership dropped the ball and/or kicked the can down the road. Now it is a sticky mess.
The discussion, I think I see, has two points of view talking past each other. One says we have a problem and it needs to be fixed. The other point of view is that if we fix the problem there will be negative consequences. However, those focused on the consequences do not appear to disagree that some kind of a problem exists.
There certainly will be consequences no matter what we do. What are the consequences of no action or action? The question is do we want to fix the problem or dig the hole deeper until we come out in China? I appreciate the education being provided on this issue. But at the same time I am a comparison shopper and have not seen an alternative suggestion that effectively addresses the problem. I feel it is important to do more than just say no.
