County surveyor Wayne Hensche has completed his survey of the Esther Lake area in Hovland. He reported the results to the county board Tuesday, November 24, 2009.
Many properties that were assumed to have 40 acres were found to have fewer than 40. One property owner ended up with 41.36 acres, but the one who ended up with the least has only 30.99 acres. Hensche found that one property in private hands was on Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) land. Esther Lake shore lots were shortened by 150-200 feet, he said.
Thecost of the survey will be $24.59 an acre for private landowners in the area. TheDNR paid its cost share of $2,500, or 10%, Hensche said. Property owners can pay for the survey along with their property taxes over a period of 10 years.
A public hearing to discuss the results of the survey was held at the courthouse Tuesday, December 15. No property owners commented.
Hensche reported to the county board December 15 that the DNR has agreed to pay $7,500 for its portion of the Judge Magney State Park survey. Hensche had previously said he would “eat” the state’s share in order to get the survey completed.
