There are racks of beautiful, colorful dresses and suits hanging in the Cook County High School Library. They aren’t there to remind kids to dress up before reading a good book. No, they were donated for the kids to wear—if they choose—to prom.
Prom is always a big deal at school. For seniors, it is their last high school dance and a chance to dress up and have a fun evening, hanging out with friends they may soon be leaving behind. But buying that new prom dress or suit can be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. Did you know that the average girl will try on ten dresses before finding the perfect fit and look? That teens spend, on average, $1,139 to go to prom? (I’m guessing that’s not teens living in Cook County.)
And Promposals are the new big thing? Promposals involve a boy asking a girl to prom through ingenious measures, like sending her on a scavenger hunt or spray painting (NOT A GOOD IDEA) a message in a public place asking his future prom date to go to prom with him. But, of course, that can go sideways if you spray paint a loving message somewhere that gets you in trouble.
By the way, girls can ask a boy out. I would never have gone to prom if a girl didn’t ask me. As far as actually dancing at prom, just remember, at age 18, Elvis Aaron Presley, all decked out in a dark blue suit and wearing blue suede shoes, sipped soft drinks with his date and watched the other kids dance because, shockingly, he didn’t know how to dance. But we all know that once Elvis started to shake his hips, he was a quick learner.
CCHS is holding its Prom on May 14. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the Grand March will be held at 7 p.m., with the dance concluding at 11 p.m. A lot of kids will be dressed to the nines, some wearing beautiful dresses and suits donated from the public, hopefully having a great night with fond memories lasting a lifetime.
