The sewing/knitting group at Zoar Lutheran Church gathered for a sewing party on Wednesday, Sept. 28 to sew pillowcases for St. Mary’s Hospital Pediatrics Unit in Duluth. The goal was to sew “a mile of pillowcase smiles.” At the end of the very productive day, the women had created 50 cheerful pillowcases.
Several seamstresses took home materials so it is anticipated that when they are finished, the project will have created 75 pillowcases for St. Mary’s Hospital. The purpose of the pillow project is to make pediatric rooms less institutional and more welcoming for children confined to the hospital.
Since November 2010, project coordinator Pam Iversen has delivered 162 colorful pillowcases to St. Mary’s Hospital Pediatrics. All were made by ladies of Zoar Lutheran Church, Finland Tuesday Craft Group, Quilt Groups of Ely and others in the community.
At the sewing party, a beautiful quilt created by Polly Erickson was unveiled Erickson donated the quilt to Zoar Lutheran Church and it will be raffled, with the drawing held at the church’s lutefisk dinner in November.
