Produce available at Food Shelf

Users of the Cook County Food Shelf are reminded that fresh produce is now available.

Bill Lenz, a volunteer with the Food Shelf, explained that normally people who visit the Food Shelf are permitted one box of food per month. He said most people come in and pick up their box at the beginning of the month, which is typically the busiest time.

Now, however, with the abundance of fresh produce being donated by local gardeners and the Community Gardens, the produce is being collected throughout the month and is accumulating faster than people have been picking it up.

“People may come in weekly for fresh produce,” said Lenz. “Of course, it’s perishable, and we don’t want to waste it.”

The Food Shelf is open every Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. Anyone who is in need can use the Food Shelf once a month to get a three-day supply of food for their family. Thisincludes a food box and food voucher. The Food Shelf is located at the First Congregational Church (lower level), 2nd Ave. W. and 3rd St., Grand Marais. Contact Lenz at 387- 9860 or Steve Deschene at 387-1767 for more information.
