Karen Halbersleben will be the guest speaker at an elegant afternoon tea at Naniboujou Lodge on Sept. 4. Halbersleben, a retired professor of European history, will present Born to be King: His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.
Karen Halbersleben is the guest speaker at Naniboujou Lodge on Sept. 4 for an Afternoon Tea fundraising event for Cook County Higher Education (CCHE). The presentation is Born to be King: His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.
Halbersleben holds a Ph.D. in British history from the University of Buffalo. She was a professor of European history in the State University of New York system and published research in Victorian social reform movements, notably the British antislavery movement. Following her retirement from Northland, she and her husband Jack Miller have retired to Devil Track Lake.
Over the past two years, Karen’s guest lecture presentations have been extremely popular. In 2012, she presented for the first time with the topic The British Monarchy: Past, Present, and Future. This was so well received that in 2013 she packed the house with the topic Winston Churchill. With the birth of a new monarch, an Afternoon Tea event seemed appropriate.
The fundraising event starts at 3 p.m. with a silent auction, then tea will be served and Karen will begin her presentation. She says Prince George of Cambridge, destined to be the first English monarch born this millennium, will likely be the most “watched” person in human history. Karen will describe how Prince George’s life and preparation to rule will differ from the approximately 85 heirs to the English throne who have preceded him since 1066, and the many surprising similarities he will share with those whose destiny was to rule.
The cost is $30 per person, with RSVPs needed by Sept. 1 by calling CCHE at 387-3411 or emailing highered@northshorecampus.org. There will also be a host of silent auction gift certificates and items. All proceeds go to the Cook County Endowment Fund. Naniboujou Lodge is located 14 miles northeast of Grand Marais along Highway 61.
