Cook County 8th grader MaeAnna Lafavor of Hovland has received the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award for her volunteer service and involvement with numerous community organizations.
MaeAnna has volunteered for Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), Empty Bowls, the Food Shelf, Feed My Starving Children, “Soles 4 Souls,” Heifer International, Girl Scouts, the Salvation Army and more. She also reads weekly with a classmate with special needs.
MaeAnna has been invited—and agreed— to speak about her community service work at the United Way in Duluth at their May luncheon.
In MaeAnna’s award letter, President Barack Obama wrote, “Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise…. Our nation faces the most challenging economic crisis in a lifetime. We will only renew America if we all work together.”
This award was a surprise to MaeAnna and was proudly presented by Principal Gwen Carman with family members, teachers and friends present on March 7.
