Thursday, May 5 was the National Day of Prayer. The day was designated by the U.S. Congress over 70 years ago and signed by President Harry S. Truman, and declared to be the first Thursday in May by President Ronald Reagan.
People met on courthouse and capitol steps all across our country to acknowledge our dependence on Almighty God and to pray to Him for our nation: for national, state and community leaders; men and women in our military, law enforcement officers, our schools, churches and families.
Three people met on the Cook County courthouse steps to pray that day. A lady joined us for a few minutes who is battling cancer, and prayer was offered for her. God tells us that “Where two or three are gathered in my Name, there am I in their midst.”
What a wonderful promise. We know our prayers were heard, as were the prayers of the millions who brought our nation’s needs to Him.
We can pray anytime and anywhere to our God who “never slumbers or sleeps.” Our nation is in desperate straits economically, morally, militarily, spiritually and many other ways. Most of us are concerned for the America our children and grandchildren will live in. Politics is not the answer, though we surely need to participate and be registered, informed voters.
Jesus is the answer. He is the Only One who can change the heart and put right desires followed by right actions in us. He is the Reason we can pray to our Creator God, because He alone died and shed His sinless blood for our sins, to reconcile every repentant sinner to His Heavenly Father. Praise God, He is alive! And He is coming back; it could be very soon. Are you ready?
