The Grand Marais Farmers Market is introducing a new free kids program called the Power of Produce Club (PoP Club).
This program was created at the Oregon City, Oregon, farmers market in 2011. Due to its success, it has spread to farmers markets all over the nation. The PoP Club has been in Minnesota since 2013 and is added to additional markets every year.
The goal of the PoP Club is to empower children to make healthy choices when selecting food to eat. The program offers a chance for children to explore the farmers market and learn about the different varieties of fruits and vegetables.
Each child participating in the program will receive a reusable shopping bag upon signing up as well as $4 worth of market tokens to be spent (by the kids) on fresh produce. Kids will receive tokens every week they attend the market. They can choose to spend the tokens or save them for future markets.
Thanks to a generous donation from the Grand Marais Oral Health Task force, we are able to bring this great program to the Grand Marais Farmers Market, located at the Cook County Community Center. Beginning Thursday July 20 children ages 4-12 may visit the Welcome Booth at the farmers market and join the PoP Club. Once they have joined, they can return each week to the Welcome Booth to receive their new tokens and a stamp on their PoP passport.
