Cook County junior guard David Bergstrom was voted to the 2011 second team all conference for the Polar League, and senior guard Ryan Martinson was voted Honorable Mention All-Conference.
Although no Viking made first team, Silver Bay’s Luke Thun was given that honor. Esko’s guards Jake Stainbrook and Jackson Lindquist and McGregor’s Zerek Marsyla joined him. Moose Lake’s Trevor Nummela was voted most valuable player by the coaches.
For the season Bergstrom and Martinson averaged 11.9 and 11.8 points per game. Bergstrom was ranked fifth in the conference in assists, with 3.4 per game, and also ranked fifth in rebounding, grabbing 7.8 boards per game.
Martinson was ranked seventh in the conference in field goal percentages, hitting 46.6 percent of his shots.
“Ryan has been good for us and has had a lot of pressure taken off of him with the emergence of Kale Boomer, Colin Everson and Dylan Quaife,” said Head Coach Mitch Dorr.
“Ryan’s rebounding and defense are often overlooked. Ryan had a severe ankle sprain last week so we may not have him for our first playoff game,” said Dorr.
“I consider David to be the best defensive player in the conference. His quick hands and ability to anticipate his opponent are unbelievable. He continues to improve every day and is by far our most consistent player.
“I think David is a first team pick, but oftentimes you need to score 17 points plus per game to make it. I would love for someone to point out a better defender. There isn’t one!” said Dorr.
