Grand Marais Public Library is set to host Dustin Luke Nelson at the library on Thursday, July 6 at 2:30 p.m. Nelson is a poet, author and artist whose most recent book is the art and poetry collection “in the office hours of the polar vortex” (Robocup Press, 2016) and the chapbook “Abraham Lincoln” (Mondo Bummer, 2013). Nelson is celebrating the release of his poetry collection this summer with a tour to regional libraries where he is to talk about becoming a poet, what inspires him, and how he creates his work. He will also read selections from vortex, and possibly other of his material.
Nelson’s poems have recently appeared in Best American Experimental Writing, Fence, The Nervous Breakdown, Paper Darts, Opium, and elsewhere. He was a resident at Bergen, Norway’s USF Verftet artist residency and was a co-creator and writer on the live scripted podcast Radio Happy Hour, which did a national tour and aired on Minnesota Public Radio.
Nelson’s performance work includes “Strike Two” (Gauss PDF, Washington Project for the Arts), “Applause” (Walker Art Center’s Open Field), “I Was Distracted But I’m Better Now” (Maker Fest St. Paul), and “Battleship Potemkin” (Flux Factory). Video work has appeared at Crane Arts (Philadelphia), the Filmpoem Festival (Antwerp), Loft 594 (Brooklyn), Altered Esthetics (Minneapolis), Short Video Biennial 2015 in Ljubljana and elsewhere. Other writings have appeared in the Walker Art Center’s Walker Reader, Rolling Stone, and Sports Illustrated, among other publications.
