Playhouse is buzzing at the start of the year





 

 

Buzz is definitely the right word for the Playhouse this January. Buzz! Buzz! Buzz! 2012 starts off running and doesn’t slow down.

First, the auditions for The Beaux’ Stratagem went very well and is all set to reconnect in June. The cast includes Jeff Fenwick, Katrina Axtell, Jordyn Kirk, Tina Kraus, Jack Nickolay, David Warren, Mike DeBevec, Sarah Warren, Sarah O’Phelan, Yvonne Block, Will Brandenburg, Maria Nickolay, Aliya Marxen and Aaron Carlson.

Some of these cast members are studying theater in college and it shows. You’ll be able to witness their powerhouse performances live on our stage this summer. This restoration comedy will run in repertory from July 19 – Aug. 12.

One role still needs to be filled and that is of Lady Bountiful. She is the benefactor of the town and also thinks she is a pretty good doctor. She almost cures as many as she kills! Auditions for this role will be Tuesday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

Speaking of auditions, the Playhouse will be auditioning performers at the ACA on January 17 for the murder mystery. A minimum of four women and three men are needed. Rehearsals will take place this winter and spring, determined by the cast and director. Performances will be at the Harbor Light Supper Club June 28 – July 1 and July 5 -8.

Auditions for the summer musical will be held January 19 at 7 p.m. at the ACA. A specific production will be determined by the options available with the performers who attend. Possibilities range from a showcase to full production. Musicians as well as vocalists are strongly encouraged to attend. Rehearsals will take place this winter and spring, determined by the cast and director. Performances will be in repertory from July 19 – August 12. There will be two performances each weekend.

Auditions for Little Women will be February 16 at 7 p.m. There are roles for nine women. High school senior Maria Nickolay will direct this production.

We begin our performance schedule with a special event on February 2. Zeitgeist will be performing For the Birds with Kevin Kling. Zeitgeist is a new music ensemble based in St. Paul. For the Birds is a compelling combination of colorful and virtuosic musical performance, songs and insightful narration. For the Birds illuminates our human drive to aspire and offers a space to contemplate ourselves as individuals, families, communities and a species.

Featuring the creativity of the Twin Cities’ music and arts community, For the Birds is a high-flying combination of new music, verbal artistry and innovative direction.

Also with this tour, local poets, storytellers and humorists are invited to a Conversation with Kevin Kling on Feb. 2 from noon to 1 p.m.

Kevin Kling is a wellknown playwright and storyteller, and his commentaries can be heard on NPR’s All Things Considered. His plays and adaptations have been performed around the world. He lives in Minneapolis.

The concert tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. The workshop fee is free with ticket to the concert or $15 adults, $5 students.

This event is a collaboration between the Playhouse, the North Shore Music Association and Cook County Community Education.

Then it’s time to “Put Your Hands Up and SHOUT!” on Feb. 9, 11 and 12. Shout! The Mod Musical returns as a dinner theater at the Harbor Light Supper Club. The groovy gals, Kerri Bilben, Karen Blackburn, Hilja Iverson, Molly Hicken and Karina Roth, throw on their go-go boots one more time. Thursday and Saturday dinner begins at 6:30 and Sunday dinner begins at 2 p.m. The dinner is a full three-course dinner with choice of prime rib, walleye or pasta. Dinner and show for only $35. Reservations can be made by calling the Harbor Light at (218) 387-1142.

Whew! And that’s just 43 days into the New Year. Hang on! It’s going to be a great year of theater and special events.
