The 35th Inuit Premiere at Sivertson’s Gallery will be March 20-21. In addition to amazing art like this sleepy soapstone carving Apangalook (left) and this Inuit print by Tim Pitsiulak, there will once again be a fabulous throat singing performance.

This year marks Sivertson Gallery’s 35th year celebrating “Art of the North” in Grand Marais, and the 20th year in Duluth (Siiviis). The monumental year kicks off with the 15th annual Inuit Premiere with events March 20 and 21. This year’s event will feature Kate Vasyliw of Dorset Fine Arts.

Dorset Fine Arts (DFA) was established in 1978 as the wholesale marketing division of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, and is located in Toronto, Canada. Unique among the Arctic co-ops for its sustained focus on the arts and artists of the community, DFA was established to continue to develop and serve the market for Inuit fine art created by the artist members of the Cape Dorset Co-op. Cape Dorset is located on Dorset Island at the southern tip of Baffin Island of Nunavut, Canada. The Inuktitut name of the village, Kinngait, means “high mountains.”

Sivertson Gallery travels to the Dorset Fine Arts showroom in Toronto each year to hand pick prints and stone carvings from the northern community. Over the year, the gallery has established wonderful professional relationships and friendships with employees of DFA.

With Kate Vasyliw’s guidance this February, Sivertson Gallery added nearly 30 new images to its already outstanding collection of Cape Dorset prints. The DFA Annual Graphics Collection has been released yearly since 1959.

Once again the Inuit event will feature Canadian throat singers to Grand Marais for five presentations over the premiere weekend, in addition to a performance in Duluth on March 20. Nina Segalowitz returns with a special guest partner for another year of fabulous performances.

The annual Inuit premiere is the only one of its kind in the lower 48 states featuring original Canadian Inuit prints, soapstone carvings and native Alaskan sculptures formed from walrus tusk, whale bone, baleen and soapstone.
