Plans are great—but can we afford them?

I just want to say for the record that I agree with Paul Sporn in regards to his last letter referencing the YMCA. It is a great organization and helps many families no matter your income bracket. No one argues that.

I would also like to agree with the other person who wrote in saying that she would like the walking track the “New Community Center” is planning. I too would use the walking track.

The point however week after week, month after month is not that a community center wouldn’t be great. It’s that this county cannot afford it. That point alone is what this community and its residents have been reacting to and for some reason the steering committee and the commissioners ignore it. They say grants and foundations will help pick up the deficit. Not a good way to start a project, but what do I know?

It is clear that most of us are beating our heads against the wall. These two groups have decided long ago what they want and are going ahead regardless of what anyone says.

I was reminded by a steering committee member, who said, “Anna, there is another group of people who live here.” It’s true, thank you for reminding me that not everyone who lives here is blue collar or working class, but we are the majority. We are the glue that holds businesses together.

I have been wrong before and have eaten a lot of crow because of it. In this case I hope I am wrong about this project for if I am not, we will be in deep doo doo.
