What do bingo, broccoli, bands, begonias, and a “Bounce House” have in common? All can be found at the upcoming 2010 Cook County Fair August 20 – 21 at the Community Center in Grand Marais.
This year’s fair will feature the traditional exhibits, of course. The community loves to see the robust tomatoes, huge potatoes, and other offerings from the garden. There is also the option of entering aromatic baked goods, tempting jams and jellies, handicrafts, photos and photo albums, and much, much, more. Premium books explaining the categories and listing the prizes that can be won at the fair should be available July 1.
The fair is especially looking for kid’s entries, which will be on display in their own section of the fair. Save those school works of art—they could be blue ribbon recipients at the fair! Give your child a sense of pride in his or her work and a little cash in his or pocket!
Fair Board Member Sharon Hendrickson said the board decided to add some incentive for kids to enter the fair this year. She said there will be special grand prizes for the kids.
The fair will also have lots of fun activities for kids, such as games for little kids (ages five and under) and a little more challenging games for kids 10 and under in the 4-H log building, as well as face painting and a cake walk. Volunteers are still needed to help out with the kids’ games and face painting. If you’d like to help out, contact Amanda Plummer, who is organizing the kids’ events, at (218) 3897-1297.
“We’re trying to bring back
simple family fun to the fair,” said Plummer.
The “inflatables”—the aforementioned Bounce House and others—will be back. And there will be the traditional fair food—popcorn and cotton candy, live bands, and bingo.
New this year will be safety booths and a car seat clinic. The car seat clinic will take place on Saturday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Stop by and make sure your child’s car seat is installed properly. And visit the other safety booths— have your child pick up a sticker at each booth to be
eligible for a prize.
If your organization wants to host a safety booth, contact Plummer at 387-1297.
Other businesses, groups, or individuals who wish to have a display at the fair are encouraged to call fair organizer Sharon Hendrickson at (218) 387-1369.
So, water your garden, finish up that craft project, and prepare for the fair!
