There was a large turnout of Nordic skiers, and skijorers for the Pincushion Mountain Winter Festival held on a beautiful Saturday, February 15. The event is hosted by the North Superior Ski and Run Club. Proceeds from the races are used to help sponsor the high school Nordic ski team as well as the Y-Ski program for kids.
Activities at the daylong event included a family ski, a snowshoe trek on the new segment of the Superior Hiking Trail, sledding, and a large bonfire for roasting marshmallows. 10K Wooden Ski Classic Race results
Chris Hegg, Grand Marais, won the men’s 10K classic wooden ski race at the February 15 Pincushion Mountain Festival.
Hegg, age 65, skied the 6.2-mile event in 47 minutes and 56 seconds (47:56).
The next finishers in order were Steve Langenbrunner 48:19; Greg Wright 53:23; Dylan Dragswiek 59:01; and John Redshaw 59:05; who are all from Cook County.
Kans Cederblad from Minnetonka was sixth in 1:03:27; Roland Thortensson of St. Peter took seventh in 1:06:09. The next finishers in order were all from Grand Marais, Simon Giavaras 1:21:07; Denny FitzPatrick 1:23:08; Michael Chmelik 1:24:51; Craig Hunter finished with a time of 1:32:51.
April Wahlstrom not only won the women’s race, but she had the fastest time overall. The CCHS cross country and track & field coach skied the 10K in 42:52.
Cecelia Chmelik, age 16, couldn’t catch her coach, finishing second in 51:01.
Naomi Tracy-Hegg, 16, placed third in 56:34; Jill Barber was fourth in 56:37; Jane Shinners fifth in 56:41; Martine Redshaw sixth in 59:02; Caitlin Anderson (Plymouth, Minnesota) seventh in 59:38; Tina Raway Hegg eighth in 103:26; Anne Hegg ninth in 1:06:01; Sue Abrahamson 10th in 1:15:25; Ann Belleman 11th in 1:15:25 and Beth Poliquin finished 12th with a time of 1:32:37. John Witzmann, Maplewood, Minnesota, won the men’s 10K freestyle race with a time of 35:03.
Christopher Mitchell of Thunder Bay, Ontario, placed second in 36:16. Danny Berka, age 16, Grand Marais, placed third in 39:44; Kris Barber, Grand Marais, took fourth in 45:48; and Levi Axtell, Grand Marais, finished fifth in 48 minutes.
Kristi Nixon, Duluth, was the women’s winner with a time of 38:27. Placing second was Kayla Kjellman of Thunder Bay, Ontario, who recorded a time of 39:43.
Olya Wright, age16, Grand Marais, crossed the line in third with a time of 44:02. Lynn Palmer of Thunder Bay, Ontario, placed fourth in 45:21. Jeanne Wright, Grand Marais, took fifth place in 48:23; Kathryn Meisner, Cloquet, placed sixth with a time of 1:13:16, and Lisa Tracy took seventh in 1:41:44. 30K Classic race
Werner Schwar, Thunder Bay, Ontario, won the 30K classic cross country ski race with a time of 1:45:36. He defeated David Anderson of Plymouth, Minnesota. who placed second in 1:51:18.
Joey Chmelik of Grand Marais took third with a time of 2:08:42. Tim Lederle, Grand Marais, was fourth in 2:11:05.
The next finishers in order were, Paul Haltvick, Washburn, Wisconsin, 2:22:56; Jay Arrowsmith- Decoux, Grand Marais, 2:29:12; Jeff Mortimore, Duluth, 2:32:30; Mike Novak, Embarrass, Minnesota, 2:34:18; Brian Berry, Thunder Bay, Ontario, 2:34:18; Dave Mutrie, Thunder Bay, Ontario, 2:34:53; Tim Nelson, Lutsen, 2:40:12; Braidy Powers, Grand Marais, 2:43:29; Tim Kennedy, Grand Marais, 2:49:30 and Joe Henry, Minneapolis, 2:59:38.
Brook Latimer, Thunder Bay, Ontario, placed first in the women’s 30K classic race. She finished with a time of 1:54:57.
Brook edged past Sarah Peters of Lappe, Ontario, who was given the same time.
Ariana Amini, Grand Marais, placed third in 2:13:35, and Sara Kylander- Johns placed fourth with a time of 2:52:57. Boys’ and Girls’ 3K results
Kaleb Berka, Grand Marais, took first place with a time of 11:23. Caleb Lyon, Eagan, Minnesota, placed second in 13:50.
Eliaas Pszwaro, Grand Marais, placed third with a time of 17:09, and Talon Wheeler of Lappe, Ontario, placed fourth with a time of 21:50.
Hazel Moffatt of Thunder Bay, Ontario, won the Girls’ 3K with a time of 13:57. Forest Wheeler of Lappe, Ontario, took second in 19:16.
Addison Lyon of Eagan, Minnesota, placed third, clocking 21:59 at the finish. Skijoring 7K results
Matthew Schoales of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and his dog crossed the line first in 23:24. Matt Nesheim, Grand Marais, placed second in 25:11.
Kristin Nixon, Duluth, was third in 26:06; Brianne Wood, Thunder Bay, Ontario, fourth in 28:17; Seija Grand, Thunder Bay, Ontario, fifth in 28:30: Adrian Hess, Lutsen, sixth in 29:07; Dave Sokolowski, Thunder Bay, Ontario, seventh in 29:23 and Adam Wells, Grand Marais, placed eighth in 32:45. Jonathan Long of Ontario placed first with a finish time of 12:11.
Guineviere Jones of Duluth was second in 13:44; Kristina Woerheide, Ely, took third in 15:03; Pattie Johnson placed fourth in 20:16 and Sarah Dragswick, Grand Marais, took fifth place with a time of 30:58.
