Pincushion Mountain Festival cross country ski race results

Despite some recent rain the trails on Pincushion were groomed and in good shape for the Pincushion Mountain Festival cross country ski races held on Saturday, February 18. This annual event is put on by North Superior Ski and Run Club.

Shane Steele, Grand Marais, won the 10K freestyle cross country ski with a time was 25:52.4, a little more than two minutes faster than Tyler Fish, from Ely.

Michael Waring, Grand Marais, placed third with a time of 28:46.8.

Other local finishers include Chris Barber, sixth place, racing in the age 60-69 age group, who crossed the line in 35:13.2. Ero Moody, racing in the high school age group, placed eighth with a time of 46:16.4. Ero’s dad, Anton, was thirty seconds behind in ninth place. Alex Teeter, also racing in the high school age group, placed tenth in 1:00:25.

Women Freestyle 10K results

Angie Robinson, Grand Marais, took first place in the freestyle 10K with a time of 29:19. Angie defeated Emma Spoon, Shane Steele’s wife, by just over two minutes. Emma’s time was 31:40.

Carli Godard of Ely was third in 33:04. 7.

Lisa Tracy, Grand Marais, placed fourth in 334:13.3 Emma Crook, high school, placed fifth in 35:06.7 Patti Craddock, Grand Marais, racing in the 60-69 age group, finished in eighth place in 41:35.2.

Men’s Classic 10K race

Brock Balabuck, Thunder Bay, placed first in the 10 classic event with a time of 37:55.3. Brock was listed in the ages < 16, so he’s a young up and coming cross country ski racer.

Placing second to Brock was the ageless Chris Hegg. Chris is 71! Chris skied the10K in 39:42.2.

Jack McCoy, skiing in the age 60-69 age group category, Grand Marais, placed third in 42:49.

Arc Haaversen, Grand Marais, placed fifth in 49:43.7. John Redshaw, placed seventh in 55:37.7. John is over 70 so it was a good day for the older fellows. Craig Hunter, Grand Marais, was skiing on wooden skis. He placed eighth in 1:21:14.7.

Women’s Classic 10K race

Skiers came from Canada, Switzerland, Billings Montana and the Twin Cities to take part in this race.

Thunder Bay skiers took the top four spots in the 10K classic. First place went to Judy Hall, who was in the age 60-69 bracket. Judy skied the hilly course in 42:53.2. Jill Barber, Grand Marais, was the top local finisher. Jill placed fifth in 48:38.6. Jane Shinners, Grand Marais, placed sixth in 50:01.2. Jane was in the age 60-69 field.

Naomi Tracy-Hegg, Grand Marais, took eighth in 51:56.0. Crossing the line with Naomi was her high school teammate Martine Redshaw who was awarded ninth place. Tina Hegg-Raway placed tenth with a time of 52:41.9. Tina was skiing on wooden skis.

Men’s 25K race

Thunder Bay’s Paul Inkila left no doubt that he was the best racer in the 5K event. Paul, somewhere over the age of 60, crossed the finish line in 1:32.2. Jonathan Rova, Grand Marais, placed second in 1:44:17.6.

The rest of the finishers were from Grand Marais and all in the over 60 age group. Tim Lederle was third in 1:51:41.4. Mike Costello placed sixth in 2:07:06.9. Chris O’Brien was seventh in 2:16:01.5. Greg Wright placed eighth in 2:20:29 and Braidy Powers finished in ninth place in 2:30:53.1.

Women’s 25K race

April Wahlstrom, Grand Marais won the women’s 25K race with a time of 1:50:21.1. Erin Endsley, Duluth was the only other women finisher. She finished in 2:03:58.7.
