Pike Lake Road, County Road 45, is one of the most heavily traveled and problematic gravel roads in Cook County. Over the past three years our lake association has given me the task of bringing road maintenance concerns to the attention of the county highway department.
On my many contacts with the highway department office, both in person and by phone, response has been both prompt and courteous. Phone messages are quickly answered and any issues are given thoughtful consideration. County Highway Supervisor Russ Klegstad will often personally respond and is willing to discuss any road problems. He has always been friendly, professional and receptive to any ideas to improve safety or to schedule necessary work.
Over the past few years, hundreds of cubic yards of material have been added to the roadbed. Ditching and culvert replacements have been made and a long sought after guardrail was installed to improve safety. Weather, frost and numerous other factors have always made upkeep of Pike Lake Road a continual challenge for county grader operators, snowplow drivers and maintenance workers.
Many thanks to Road Supervisor Russ Klegstad, County Engineer David Betts, office staffers Lisa and Nanette and the entire highway department crew for their often thankless efforts under challenging weather conditions and budget constraints.
