Pickup Truck Opera coming soon

The North Shore Music Association and the Opp- Hvidston Foundation present a fun and exciting show for all ages by Mixed Precipitation’s Pickup Truck Opera. Unfolding on their pickup truck stage, the troupe performs Mozart’s 1791 opera, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). Launched into the future, a group of young explorers navigates the cosmos as rival forces led by the Queen of the Night and Sarastro, the Wizard of the Sun, attempt to control their destiny.

The show will open August 12 at 7 p.m. in the Hovland Townhall. The next day, August 13, it will be held at North House Folk School at 7 p.m.

This futuristic telling of the opera, created by music director Gary Ruschman, playwright Francisco Benavides, and staging director Taous Khazem, is enacted by Pickup Truck Opera’s cast of singers, puppeteers, and instrumentalists. It features Mozart’s fiery arias, epic choruses, and the groovy beats of the 90s discotheque, including hits by Deee-lite, Pizzicato Five, and Icelandic pop star Björk.

The Pickup Truck Opera continues Mixed Precipitation’s 14-year tradition of outdoor theater extravaganzas, touring Minnesota communities in late summer. Mixed Precipitation’s mission is to create festive theatrical events that inspire social engagement. Since 2009 they have presented their signature events, A Picnic Operetta and Pickup Truck Opera, at community gardens, urban farms, parks, orchards, and vineyards throughout Minnesota

There is no admission fee for the Hovland and Grand Marais performances, but a suggested donation to Mixed Precipitation of $10–$25 per person is very much appreciated. Reservations at mixedprecipitation.org are also appreciated, so the group will know how many people to expect.

This activity is made possible in part by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
