Phyllis Ann Kalb, “P.K.”





 

 

Phyllis Ann Kalb, “P.K.,” 74, died May 4, 2016 at Cook County Care Center, Grand Marais, after living with cancer for several years.

Phyllis was born on February 19, 1942 to Lloyd and Judith (Allen) Thompson in Duluth. The family moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 1949. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1960 and after attending Rochester Jr. College and the University of Minnesota she went to work for the Mayo Clinic.

Phyllis married Jim Kalb on June 22,1963, moved to Orono, Minnesota and began raising their family. In 1977, they moved to Grand Marais where they were in the motel business operating Trailside Cabins & Motel. Phyllis also worked at Lutsen Mountains Ski Area, Cook County Schools, Best Western Motel and Grand Marais Hotels, Inc., where she was a favorite of guests at the front desk at Aspen Lodge.

Phyllis was gregarious, kind, a social butterfly and always greeted you with a smile. She loved her family and friends and will be missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Judith Thompson and her husband, Jim Kalb.

Phyllis is survived by her sons Jim Kalb of Shorewood, Minnesota and John Kalb of Grand Marais; grandchildren Nick Kalb of Waterford, Ireland and Olivia Kalb of Queenstown, New Zealand and John Henry Kalb of Grand Marais; her brother Jim (Marnie) Thompson of Northfield, Minnesota and nieces, Siri and Liv Thompson.

A memorial service will be held this summer at a date yet to be announced.

The family would like to thank everyone who cared for Phyllis during her stay at Cook County Care Center.
