Traffic was stopped September 8 on the corner of County Road 8 and the Gunflint Trail when a large culvert was transported to its new home on Sobanja Lane (County Road 75) just off County Road 6. The culvert is 54 feet long and 17 feet wide. The span over Little Devil Track River on Sobanja Lane is just under 17 feet. The U.S. Forest Service and the DNR are trying to improve aquatic species passage with this project. The previous passage was over 10 feet wide but storms blew the road out several times in previous years. This new culvert is a “bottomless pipe” that allows for the natural creek bed to stay in place. This project was enabled with funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Sobanja Lane has had a one-lane bypass while the culvert work is being done.
