Forty-four artists traveled from near and far for the Grand Marais Art Colony Plein Air Competition August 26 to September 2. On the Point, Matt Kania puts finishing touches on a painting of the omnipresent rock cairns.
Lisa Stauffer’s peaceful pond won the Grand Marais Art Colony “People’s Choice” award. In addition to being a populist painter, Stauffer is an Art Colony instructor.
Nocturne – Grand Marais Harbor by Michelle Wegler of Duluth captures the serenity of the Grand Marais harbor at night. Wegler’s painting earned first place in the Plein Air Night Paint category.
David Gilsvik of Two Harbors selected sailboats next to the Coast Guard Station for one of his Plein Air pieces. An exhibition sale of the Plein Air paintings is on display at the Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais until September 25.
Susan Novak was awarded second place in the Plein Air competition for this rendition of a secluded lakeside cottage.
