Football practice began in earnest last week as the Cook County Vikings greeted 28 players for workouts. Head Coach Mitch Dorr said he feels this year’s team will be young but very competitive, with an emphasis on speed and skills rather than size and brute strength. The players will don pads and full gear next week as they work themselves into shape for the season. Come out and see the Vikings play their intersquad scrimmage on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.
The CCHS volleyball team began serious practice last week with 33 ninth through 12th grade students reporting for practice. The Vikes hold an intersquad game on Wednesday, August 25 at 6 p.m. one hour before the football team’s intersquad game. Head cross country coach Chris Hegg (in the back with cap on) said that “so far 28 girls and boys have reported for cross country practice but we expect another 10 or so to come out once school starts.” The team’s first home meet is Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. on Pincushion. Hegg expects both boys’ and girls’ varsity teams to be very competitive this season, and a trip to state for at least several individuals if not both teams. Running in the afternoon shade is (L-R) Cheyenne Sorlie, Rose Ingebrigtsen, Matea Avado, Sarissa Falk, Chris Hegg, Audrey Summer and Baily Morrison.
