The Windigo Lodge moose has been a landmark for Gunflint Trail residents for more than a decade, so folks passing by were shocked and dismayed to see that the life-sized moose reproduction had toppled on July 19. Char Ekroot-Nelson said the moose’s ankles gave way after more than a decade in the elements. The moose was crafted by Char’s husband, Bud Nelson, and famed northland artist, Jim Korf in Moose Valley in 1993. It had an unpleasant incident there—it was shot several times before Bud and Yarrow Korf erected it at Windigo. Inset: A few days after the fall, the moose was up again “in traction.” In a phone call at press time, Char said the moose was standing on his own, his ankles rejuvenated by Yarrow Korf. There are plans to reinforce the base so the moose will be standing for future generations to enjoy.
