When it comes to making snow sculptures, the Hofeldt family takes the art to a whole other level. “My family had the best time making this giant snow sculpture at the top of our driveway on Valentine’s Day, given the perfect packing snow conditions after that rain,” said Andrea Hofeldt. The Hofeldts live up the Gunflint Trail at Loon Lake Lodge. The exquisite snow sculpture was created by Andrea, Derek, and their three children, Dax, Otis, and Niles. Some weeks later, Andrea said, “It is still standing and looking sharp! It’s pretty solid and will most likely be up until the end of March. Derek Hofeldt (my husband and owner of Loon Lake Lodge) is the artist in the family. It stands about 22 ft. tall. We definitely had to use a ladder and teamwork to fill buckets and lift them above our heads. Our sons Otis Hofeldt (age 5) is pictured on the left and Dax Hofeldt (age 7) is on the right in the photo.
I think it took about four hours to make with three different changes of clothes/gloves because the snow/rain was so wet. This is our second sculpture in the same location. Back in March 2019, we made an abominable snowman. We purely do it for fun and hope when people drive by, it brings a smile to their faces. We didn’t name either, but if we had to, the abominable snowman would be named Larry, and the gnome looks like a Kevin!
