Readers of the Cook County News-Herald are very familiar with columnist Sandy Holthaus’s “A Taste of Home” column. It’s funny, heartwarming and filled with great recipes on top of that.

Recently her daughter Zoe fostered a Balinese street puppy while visiting Indonesia. Through a rescue program the puppy was brought to the United States and adopted by Zoe. Zoe named her new puppy Mimpi, which means My Dream in the Indonesian language.

There is something of a mystery as to where the Bali street dogs first came from. According to a Balinese legend, a wealthy Chinese trader brought a chow chow with him to Singaraja in the year 1400 and the dog got loose just long enough to interact with the Anjin Kintamani dogs, which can be traced back 5,000 years to the island.

Remarkably, Mimpi, who is still just a young pup, can already understand American dogs and converse quite well with them.
