This playful, colorful paint-by-number mural was designed by Mila Horak (right) and painted by the public during the Arts Festival on the Grand Marais Library lawn. Horak and friends installed the 12 panels on the north wall of Birchbark Books and Gifts mid-September. Funds ($1,250) to make and install the mural came from the 2016 Great Place Project (GPP). Sawtooth Clinic’s Moving Matters and the Cook County Chamber of Commerce sponsor the GPP. Both the Minnesota Power Foundation and the Cook County Community Fund contribute money to GPP. The definition of a Great Place is that it is inviting, beautiful, eye catching and reflects the unique character of the community. Mila’s mural seems to hit on all of those categories. So far a lot of people have been seen stopping and spending time looking at and enjoying the sweet, whimsical painting.
