Area youths are enjoying summer now, but before vacation started there was a rite of passage. Graduation and commencement ceremonies were held at Sawtooth Elementary School, Great Expectations School and Birch Grove Elementary School. Sawtooth Elementary 5th graders lined up for a photo before the May 29 ceremony marking their passage from elementary to middle school.
Great Expectations School held a graduation ceremony for the 8th graders leaving GES to go to Cook County High School, Lyndon Blomberg, Michael Hendrickson, Amelia Roth and Michael Peterson. Melissa Oberg was the commencement speaker and she thanked the Class of 2015 for all they had taught her during her time as their teacher. Students each read an essay they wrote reflecting on their school life. After diplomas and gifts were presented by GES Board Chair Sara Hingos, Alyssa and Jonathan Hedstrom and Karina and Mike Roth performed I Hope You Dance for the graduates. Everyone enjoyed visiting and congratulating the students over refreshments.
Birch Grove Community School also held an end-of-year program with music, poems and a little graduation ceremony, recognizing the students transitioning to the next grade level.
