With her older sister looking on, Mary Mueller takes a paw and looks adoringly at Smokey Bear. The Mueller sisters and their father Justin were part of a larger crowd that came to wish Smokey a happy 70th birthday. The party was held at the Gunflint Ranger Station on Saturday, August 9. Another birthday party was also held at the Tofte Ranger Station on Sunday.
Pete Igoe adjusts Smokey ’s shoulder straps as Smokey waves at passersby. At age 70 Smokey isn’t as flexible as he was when he was a young cub, and he sometimes needs help to get dressed.
