Drivers going east on Highway 61 through Grand Marais will notice a beautiful new mural on the wall of Johnson’s Grocery. The mural is the creation of the Cook County 4th and 9th grade students who worked on the project under the direction of 4th grade teacher Jana Larson and several other mentors and instructors. A crew of 6-8 volunteers and professionals from Concrete Design & Landscaping (mostly Billy Olson) put the mural up three weeks ago. Gail Hedstrom and several volunteers have started grouting the mural. There is more grout work to be done and some painting will be done above the tiles, so look forward to seeing this wonderful addition to the community take shape over the summer. Above: Billy Olson (kneeling) and Jerry Wilkes fasten the mural sections in place. Right: Ann Mershon and Jack Hedstrom carry one of the heavy pieces to the wall. All of the money to purchase materials and supplies was donated by generous individuals and groups from the county.
