The Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Mixed Softball Tournament saw lots of great ball and friendly competition. Above: Team Grand Portage and Higher Mark Construction shared high-fives at the end of their game. Both teams have players from throughout the county and have faced one another many times on the diamond. Right: Another team with mixed membership is Team Murray, which has a number of local players and others from Cloquet, MN. Team Murray was undefeated in the 2012 Rendezvous Days Tournament. Tanner Murray was powerful at bat for his team.
There was an extra-special moment in the Rendezvous Days Tournament for Team Deschampe, when Veronica Olson, the last of the 10 brothers and sisters of her generation and Butch Deschampe, the oldest male cousin in the Deschampe family took the field so Veronica could throw the first pitch. There were cheers of “Go Grandma O!” and “Yeah, Grandma!” as she happily started the game. She then turned the ball over to Roger “Hotchie” Deschampe, Sr., who actually pitched in the game against a Cloquet team. Veronica’s granddaughter Shaunna Wood noted that Team Deschampe had the “Greatest Deschampe” start the game!
