A purple finch stops briefly on a gnarly branch for a short rest. These little beauties winter in the south and come back in the spring, although some will winter in the north if they have an adequate food supply. The finch captured by the lens of Jean Brislance is a male. Males have a deep wine-red plumage while females are streaked brown with white eyebrows.
