Although there were only a few shivering souls who were on time, standing in the gray, damp, cold Coast Guard parking lot at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, by 9:30 a.m. there were about 25 folks on hand ready to participate in the “The Small Town Lip Sync Challenge.” Jaye White of Cascade Vacation Rentals and Visit Cook County organized the viral video lip sync challenge. Two prominent participants who danced and lip synced—and they don’t even have lips that move–were Sammy Seagull from Joyne’s Ben Franklin Department Store and Murray the Moose from Visit Cook County. As the group moved from store to store, picking up more participants and thawing their bodies as they warmed up, they began to lip sync to the catchy song. All of this goodhearted silliness was captured on film. The video features the downtown core and local businesses, prominent citizens, and locals and tourists lip syncing to “Home” by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros (featuring Gulu Widow’s Choir). The song ended at the Grand Marais Harbor Park with a challenge to other small towns to show what they’ve got. The final edited video will be posted on YouTube and Facebook through Visit Cook County and Cascade Vacation Rentals. Staff photo/Brian Larsen
