Climb Theater Inc., from Inver Grove Heights, came to Birch Grove Elementary last week and worked with students K-2 and 3-5 on bullying prevention. Climb Theater is a touring, educational theater that brings original plays and classes directly to school (and other agencies) across the Upper Midwest. Their most popular topics include bullying prevention, empathy, acceptance differences, respect and cliques and exclusion. At Birch Grove children in K-2 learned to say, “I don’t like what you’re doing and I want you to stop.” They were also taught what to do if they see others being bullied, and to report bullying. Children in grades 3-5 learned about ACT, (Act calm, Change the subject, Take off safely) and SEW (Say stop, Engage in something else, Walk away). Role-playing seemed to be the favorite activity of the children, said Birch Grove program director Diane Blanchette.
