The quiet of Grand Portage State Park has been disturbed in recent months as construction of a new 5,800 square foot visitor center has been underway. The visitor center and other features are starting to take shape and visitors now see a glimpse of how welcoming the park will be when work is completed. Above: In addition to the large visitor center with interpretive displays, there is a large open pavilion, perfect for family or ceremonial gatherings. Lower right: A new observation deck overlooking the water is another new addition. Above right: While construction is underway, the park is closed during the week because of limited parking and safety concerns. However, visitors are welcome on the weekend, as this temporary sign demonstrates. Park manager Rick Novitsky said the park hopes to be in the new building by Memorial Day 2010.
