Tofte Supervisors Paul James and Jim King attended the Tuesday, July 8, 2014 meeting of the Cook County/ Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) to share their plans to construct a 12-unit senior housing development on land in Tofte just behind the Birch Grove Community Center. Supervisor James, pictured here with a map of the proposed development area and an architect’s rendering of what the housing could look like, said he recognized the need for senior housing 10 years ago because of his grandmother. He said she had to leave the community because there was no place for her to live. For the last four years the township has worked doggedly to create senior housing in the community. Supervisor King told the EDA that Tofte was not asking for money, just a vote of confidence as the township seeks funding from other sources. The EDA board passed a unanimous motion of support for the Tofte project.
