When he announced his retirement, former Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk recommended that Chief Deputy Leif Lunde serve as interim sheriff. The county board accepted his recommendation at the May 20 board meeting. Lunde’s move to sheriff meant a vacancy in the chief deputy position. Lunde recommended, and on June 17 the county board approved, the promotion of Deputy Ben Hallberg to chief deputy. A brief ceremony took place on Tuesday, July 1 in the Cook County courtroom to allow Lunde and Hallberg to take the oath of office for their new positions. After being sworn in, Lunde helped Hallberg pin on his new chief deputy badge.
