When Grand Marais photographer David R. Johnson first saw this lovely bird, he thought it was a snowy owl because it had so much white plumage. However, after further investigation he found that it is a northern hawk owl, Surnia ulula. According to www.allaboutbirds.org, the northern hawk owl’s long tail distinguishes it from all other North American owls. Its head and body is broader than those of hawks.
