This interesting creature is the sphinx moth, identified by its proboscis, a straw-like mouthpart that uncoils to feed on nectar. The unusual insect resembles a hummingbird as it hovers around flowers, moving sideways and stopping in midair. Jake Barnard of Grand Marais took some fabulous photos of a pair of sphinx moths alongside Croftville Road in Grand Marais on August 27.
