Cook County Coroner Sandra Stover and three assistant coroners were sworn in at the Cook County Courthouse courtroom on January 8. Each county is required to have a coroner, who must be a licensed physician. Coroners work with sheriffs’ offices and determine medical cause of death, but sheriffs’ offices determine if a cause of death has “legal ramifications,” Stover said. Autopsies for Cook County are done by the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office. Medical examiners must be forensic pathologists.
